Pressure & overwhelm · 7 min read

How do I deal with pressure when everything piles up?

A practical way to separate what needs doing now from what is merely shouting loudest.

01

Why the pile feels bigger in your head

The brain is bad at calmly storing twelve unfinished jobs while also doing job number one. Each unfinished thing can keep popping back up like a notification you cannot swipe away.

Pressure also makes prioritising harder. The loudest task, newest message or most emotionally uncomfortable job can grab attention even when it is not the most important. You end up busy without getting the pressure down.

Trying to solve everything mentally keeps the whole system loaded. Externalising the list is not productivity theatre; it simply gives your working memory less to carry.

02

Use four boxes

Write everything down, then mark each item NOW, NEXT, ASK or DROP. NOW means there is a real reason it needs action today. NEXT means it matters but deserves a time, not constant background worry. ASK means another person needs to clarify, help or own part of it. DROP means it can wait, be reduced or not happen.

Then choose one NOW item and define the next visible action. Not ‘sort the house’; ‘put one wash on’. Not ‘deal with money’; ‘open the bank app and list the three payments’. Clarity reduces the size of the first step.

When new things arrive, do not automatically add them to NOW. Put them through the same four boxes. Otherwise the pile quietly rebuilds while you are clearing it.

03

When pressure is not just a list

Sometimes the pile is not fixable with organisation because there is genuinely too much being asked of you. In that case the useful move may be a conversation, a boundary, asking for help, changing a deadline or accepting that something will be ‘good enough’ rather than perfect. A better list cannot create more hours in the day.

Take this with you

Do not solve the whole pattern. Catch the next moment a little earlier.

Understanding helps, but the useful bit is what happens the next time the pattern shows up. Pick one idea from this page and test it. You can always come back for the rest.
