Avoidance & action · 7 min read

Why do I procrastinate when something matters?

Why caring about something can sometimes make starting it harder.

01

Why important things get avoided

A task can be important and still feel threatening. The job application matters, so rejection matters. The difficult email matters, so saying the wrong thing matters. The workout matters, so confronting how out of routine you feel matters.

Avoidance gives immediate relief. You check something else, tidy a drawer, watch one video, tell yourself you will start when you are in the right frame of mind. The relief teaches your brain: ‘Good move. Dodging that made the discomfort drop.’ That makes the same move more tempting next time.

The trap is waiting for motivation to arrive first. Quite often motivation turns up after action has started, not before it.

02

What to try

Shrink the start until it feels almost silly. Not ‘write the report’; open the report and write the heading. Not ‘sort my finances’; find the latest statement. Not ‘go for a 5k’; put your trainers on and walk for ten minutes.

Decide the first physical action, not the whole project. ‘Work on website’ is vague. ‘Open index.html and change the About heading’ is startable. Brains handle doors better than fog.

Use a ten-minute deal: you only owe the task ten minutes. At ten minutes you can stop without calling it failure. Often you will continue; sometimes you will not. Both outcomes still train starting instead of avoiding.

03

Watch the perfection trick

If the rule in your head is ‘do it properly or do not bother’, procrastination gets a free pass. A rough first pass, an ugly draft or a short session is not the finished result. It is how finished results usually begin.

Take this with you

Do not solve the whole pattern. Catch the next moment a little earlier.

Understanding helps, but the useful bit is what happens the next time the pattern shows up. Pick one idea from this page and test it. You can always come back for the rest.
